Freelance Writing: 5 Tips for Marketing Yourself

Marketing for someone who doesn’t know the industry, or thought their marketing needs would be taken care of by their agent or publisher, are in for a slap from reality.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

1) Write from, not about, your experiences. Readers won’t always care that you’re the middle child, but they will care how you can slant this experience into an interesting article about middle children.

2) Magazines most often look for inventive creativity, not creative writing.

3) Your idea needs to slant toward the market: the needs of editors; specific readership. Unfortunately, the market will not slant toward your idea.

4) When it comes to markets, there isn’t a box. Someone, somewhere, accepts pieces like yours.

5) You don’t have to be an expert to write a good article — you just have to know how to find and use information.

As aspiring freelance writers and novelists, what have you come up with?
